John Hammond from security firm Huntress Labs, said it appears The REvil gang, a major Russian-speaking ransomware syndicate, was behind the attack. Criminals targeted a software supplier called Kaseya, using its network management package as a conduit to spread the ransomware through cloud service providers.
“This is a colossal and devastating supply chain attack.” Hammond said thousands of computers were hit.
The White House and the federal Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) did not immediately return messages seeking comment.
